Charles J Fetterman MD PC provides in-office glaucoma laser surgery as opposed to sending patients to a hospital or ambulatory center for treatment.

What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a condition that affects the optic nerve’s ability to deliver visual signals from the eye to the part of the brain that processes them. This condition results in a slow loss of optic nerve fibers, causing a black spot in your field of vision. If glaucoma goes untreated, the patient can suffer a slow, progressive vision loss. Because glaucoma is asymptomatic, patients require extensive eye examination in order to diagnose the condition. This examination includes a visual field test that can identify areas of loss in your visual field or any other symptoms that could be affecting your optic nerve.

Glaucoma patients suffer from vision loss, tunnel vision, and instances of halos around lights. This typically happens to patients over the age of 40. The reason this happens is that the eye’s optic nerve can become damaged over time, which leads to a decline in vision. This happens as a result of the buildup of pressure in the eye over time. This happens so gradually that many patients will show no symptoms or feel no pain.

Who is at risk?
Glaucoma can develop at any age, but it is more common for patients aged 60 years and older. African-American patients may develop glaucoma at a younger age and have an overall higher risk of developing the condition. You may also be at risk if there is a history of glaucoma and high intraocular pressure in your family history. Glaucoma can even develop in people with average or normal intraocular pressure readings.

Glaucoma Care

Can it be treated?
There is currently no cure for glaucoma, but there are several effective therapeutic procedures that can be implemented to slow the progression of the disease.
We have different eye medication and laser treatments that we can perform painlessly and conveniently right here in our office.

We offer laser procedures such as  – selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) – to open the outflow path and relieve/reduce the eye pressure. This therapy is performed with the goal of slowing or stopping the progressive damage of the optic nerve and visual field. Through early detection, treatment, and close monitoring of the condition, we can help prevent many patients from suffering symptomatic vision loss.

Charles J Fetterman MD PC and his team can begin treating glaucoma with an eye exam. Our testing will reveal whether or not your eye is damaged from glaucoma. Once we know what we’re dealing with, we can begin to work to correct the problem.
